Minister Grisha Heyliger-Marten confirmed that a six-member delegation from St. Maarten actively participated in the second Dutch Caribbean Agriculture, Livestock, and Fishery Association (DC-ALFA) Conference held in Bonaire from May 19 to 23, 2025. The delegation included senior policy advisors and representatives from the primary sector.

Delegates represented both government and grassroots stakeholders. The group included Mrs. Avril Isaac and Mr. Shervin Frederick from the Inspectorate of the Ministry of TEATT, along with Mr. Mervyn Butcher, farmer Josiah Harley, farmer Oliver Williams, and fisherman Lee Lake. The Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture supported the inclusion of the primary sector representatives. Minister Heyliger-Marten’s cabinet personally coordinated their participation to ensure frontline voices had a platform.

The DC-ALFA Conference brought together participants from six Dutch Caribbean islands. The event promoted regional knowledge-sharing and policy collaboration in agriculture and food security. Delegates joined interactive workshops, site visits to innovative farms, and policy sessions that addressed sustainability and resilience in food production.
St. Maarten’s delegation used the opportunity to learn, network, and share local experiences. Their presence underscored St. Maarten’s growing commitment to sustainable food systems. The conference fostered regional unity and highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing small island developing states.

Heyliger-Marten praised the delegation for representing St. Maarten effectively. She affirmed the importance of involving farmers and fishers in strategic dialogue. Their insights, she noted, ensure that policy remains grounded in reality.
