Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Dr. Luc Mercelina,

congratulates the people of the Republic of Suriname following their peaceful parliamentary elections held on Sunday,

May 25, 2025.“The people of Suriname have once again affirmed the strength and maturity of their democratic institutions,”

stated Prime Minister Mercelina.

“They conducted the elections in an orderly manner,

which underscores their deep commitment to democratic governance and political stability.”

Although the ruling Progressive Reform Party (VHP) and the opposition National

Democratic Party (NDP) finished nearly neck-and-neck,

Prime Minister Mercelina expressed confidence in Suriname’s ability to manage the coalition-building process effectively.

He emphasized that, moving forward, the country will benefit from sustained civic engagement and political dialogue.

“I commend both President Chan Santokhi and opposition leader Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons for engaging in a competitive and transparent democratic process,”

said Dr. Mercelina. “Their leadership—and more importantly,

the voices of the Surinamese electorate—will shape the country’s future as it stands at the cusp of economic transformation.

”He further acknowledged the importance of Suriname’s upcoming energy developments.

As the country prepares for oil production from the Gran Morgu offshore project in 2028,

Prime Minister Mercelina identified this initiative as a catalyst for regional progress.

“This unfolding economic potential not only brings hope to Surinamese citizens

but also offers promising opportunities for our wider Caribbean community,” he added.

At the same time, Prime Minister Mercelina recognized the enduring historical and cultural bonds between Sint Maarten and Suriname.
