it holds the constitutional duty to ensure that every child in Sint Maarten receives safe, equitable, and high-quality education. Therefore, while governance remains under the authority of school boards,

the Ministry continues to monitor conditions that may affect the educational environment. Importantly, the concerns raised by the teachers serve as a reminder that leadership and institutional culture significantly impact student outcomes.

“Each teacher contributes to the growth and future of our nation,” Minister Gumbs stated. “When they feel unsupported or unheard, students inevitably suffer. Learning suffers. Continuity suffers. We cannot ignore that.”

She emphasized the importance of ensuring respect, accountability, and consistent support in every school setting—public or subsidized. Moreover, the Ministry actively pursues stronger oversight tools through the draft Education Supervision Law.

This legislation, once enacted, will enhance transparency, improve compliance standards, and raise accountability levels across the education system.

Notably, this move reflects the Ministry’s long-term vision for structural improvements in education governance. In expressing her appreciation, Minister Gumbs said,

“I thank the educators of St. Dominic and across the island for their service and dedication, often in trying conditions.

As an alumna of the same school system, I find these reports especially troubling. They reveal an urgent need for reflection and reform.”

Moving forward, the Ministry pledges to keep the public informed and urges all stakeholders to participate in open, respectful dialogue.

By doing so, everyone can help restore trust and ensure that schools remain places of growth, safety, and integrity for both students and staff.
