Authorities remind residents, motorists, and all stakeholders that a full-scale live drill for Hurricane Exercise 2025 (HUREX 2025) will take place on Tuesday, June 17, between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM.

The exercise will temporarily affect both air and road traffic, particularly around the Princess Juliana International Airport and the Simpson Bay Lagoon area.

Organizers will close the airport during the drill to simulate a realistic emergency response scenario.

In addition, multiple roads near the airport will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the training exercise.
These measures are necessary to create safe conditions for participants and to test the effectiveness of Sint Maarten’s disaster response systems under realistic pressure.
As part of the drill, emergency service units and military vehicles will be visibly active in the affected areas.
Government personnel, first responders, and non-governmental actors will be collaborating during the exercise,

simulating responses to a severe hurricane impact. There is no cause for public concern—this is a planned training activity.
While some delays may occur, authorities urge the public to plan ahead and avoid the Simpson Bay and Airport Road area during the exercise window.
Detour signs and traffic officials will be in place to guide motorists safely around restricted zones.
The national disaster response system conducts the HUREX exercise annually to test the coordination, communication, and operational readiness of its 10 Emergency Support Functions (ESFs),
as well as the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). These exercises involve cooperation with the Dutch military detachment stationed on the island and other key partners.
By running realistic simulations, Sint Maarten continues to strengthen its ability to respond quickly and effectively to hurricanes and other natural disasters.
