Minister Brug Seeks SER Advice on Funeral Assistance Increase

Minister Richinel Brug has submitted a draft national decree to the Social Economic Council (SER) for advice. The proposal raises funeral assistance from XCG 4,500.00 to a maximum of XCG 9,000.00.

This move follows a motion by MP Egbert Doran during the October 2024 budget debate. Rising burial costs and the growing cost of living drove the call for change. The government now aims to update its funeral assistance policy to reflect today’s financial realities.

Minister Brug emphasized the urgency. “Funerals come unexpectedly. Families often face a heavy financial burden while grieving,” he said. “The current amount no longer covers the real costs. Prices for goods, services, and funerals have all increased.”

The new proposal is part of a broader effort to ease the burden on citizens. “As Minister, I understand the need for support during life’s hardest moments,” Brug added. “This motion, which I supported as an MP, remains a priority.”

The draft decree falls under the existing law regulating financial aid. SER’s advice will be reviewed before it goes to the Council of Advice.

This step marks progress in supporting families during loss. If approved, the change will double the current funeral aid. The ministry hopes this will ease pressure on struggling households.

The SER’s input is expected soon. Final approval will follow the Council of Advice’s review.

Minister Brug continues to focus on social protection and economic resilience. The funeral assistance increase aligns with this mission. It addresses a clear need in the community.

More updates will follow as the process moves forward.
