The Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department within the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, proudly congratulates the recipients of the Caribbean Excellence in Health Research and Action Awards, presented at the Caribbean Public Health Agency’s (CARPHA) 69th Health Research Conference (CHRC).

This milestone event recently took place in Barbados.Held under the theme “Mental Health: The Hidden Pandemic,” the conference brought together nearly 400 delegates and featured 173 oral and poster presentations, with participation from 16 countries.

In addition to healthcare professionals, representatives from sectors such as tourism, finance, and disaster management actively contributed, underscoring the broad relevance of public health research in shaping regional policy.

During the prestigious awards ceremony, CARPHA honored two outstanding figures for their lifelong contributions to public health.

Professor Jennifer Knight-Madden received recognition for her impactful work in pediatric care and clinical research,

while Professor Ian Hambleton earned accolades for his leadership in statistical epidemiology throughout the Caribbean.

Several emerging researchers also received top honors. Dr. Melissa Francis was awarded the David Picou Young Researcher Award 2025,

Tonya Campbell earned 1st Place in the Donald Simeon Award 2025, and Julia Manderville received the 2nd Place Donald Simeon Student Prize 2025.

In the poster presentation category, Victor Ihezue and Dr. Shavon Alleyne secured first and second place, respectively.Looking ahead,

CARPHA announced that the 70th CHRC will be hosted in Guyana in April 2026, under the theme “Innovations in Health.”

This future gathering promises to expand the conversation on health advancements and their implementation across the Caribbean region.

Additionally, CARPHA plans to launch a regional research repository focused on policy-relevant studies.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has pledged its support through a dedicated special issue in the Pan American Journal, further strengthening access to impactful research across the hemisphere.

CPS commends all honorees for their dedication, innovation, and continued pursuit of health equity throughout the Caribbean.
