Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport (ECYS), Melissa D. Gumbs, proudly opened the Performance Sports Academy’s (PSA) High School Basketball Tournament last week,
marking yet another dynamic event aimed at promoting athleticism and sports participation among the youth of St. Maarten.
The tournament brought together young athletes from across the island, reinforcing the importance of sports as a tool for unity, personal growth, and discipline.
Moreover, PSA used the opportunity to recognize five outstanding individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping the basketball landscape on the island.
These honorees—William “Yorkie” York, William Barry, Gordon St. Luce, Derick Prince, and Robert “Robbie” Pantophlet—have long committed themselves to the development of basketball through coaching, refereeing, and consistent advocacy.
Minister Gumbs joined the PSA team in presenting the awards, personally acknowledging each recipient for their tireless dedication.
